First Apartment Checklist: Everything You Need Before, During, and After Your Move
Moving into your first apartment involves dozens of tasks happening at the same time — signing paperwork, buying furniture, setting up utilities, forwarding your mail. Without a checklist, things fall through the cracks. With one, you move in on day one with the lights on, the internet working, and a bed to sleep in.
This checklist is broken into three phases: Before You Move, Move-In Day, and First Two Weeks. Work through each section in order, and you won't have to scramble.

Phase 1: Before You Move (4–6 Weeks Out)
The earlier you handle this phase, the smoother everything else goes. Most of these tasks have lead times — utilities need setup windows, movers book up fast, and your budget needs time to take shape.
Lease and Paperwork
- Read your entire lease before signing — every page
- Write down your lease start date, end date, and monthly due date
- Note any rules on guests, pets, noise, and alterations (nail holes, painting, etc.)
- Get the name and contact info for your property manager or landlord
- Ask how maintenance requests are submitted
- Confirm what utilities are included in rent vs. what you pay separately
- Get written confirmation of any verbal promises made before signing

Budget Setup
- Calculate your total move-in costs: first month, last month, security deposit, any fees
- Build a monthly budget with rent, utilities, groceries, and transportation
- Set aside a buffer for one-time setup costs: furniture, kitchen supplies, cleaning products
- Open a dedicated checking account for rent payments if you don't already have one
Utilities and Services
- Identify which utilities you're responsible for (electric, gas, water, internet)
- Call or go online to set up electric and gas service — give your move-in date as the start date
- Research internet providers at your address and schedule installation (slots fill up)
- Set up renter's insurance — it's inexpensive and covers your belongings
- Update your address with your bank, employer, and any subscriptions

Moving Logistics
- Decide: renting a truck yourself, hiring movers, or asking friends with vehicles
- If hiring movers, get at least two quotes and book early — especially for end-of-month dates
- If renting a truck, reserve it at least two weeks out
- Gather free boxes from grocery stores, liquor stores, or Buy Nothing groups
- Buy packing supplies: tape, markers, bubble wrap or packing paper
- Start packing non-essentials (off-season clothes, books, décor) now
Phase 2: Move-In Day
Move-in day is the highest-stakes day of the entire process. One task here — the walkthrough — can save you hundreds of dollars when you eventually move out.
Before You Bring a Single Box Inside
- Do a full apartment walkthrough before unloading anything
- Photograph and video every room: walls, floors, ceilings, appliances, windows, doors
- Open every cabinet, closet, and appliance and photograph the interior
- Test every light switch, outlet, faucet, toilet, and appliance
- Note any existing damage in writing — scuffs, stains, chips, marks
- Email or text your documentation to your landlord the same day with a timestamp
- Keep your own copy stored somewhere permanent (cloud storage, not just your phone)
This documentation protects your security deposit. The more specific your photos and notes, the harder it is to dispute pre-existing damage later.
Practical Move-In Tasks
- Locate the breaker box and note which breakers control which rooms
- Find the water shutoff valve
- Locate the thermostat and learn how to operate it
- Change the locks or request new keys if your lease allows — at minimum, ask when locks were last rekeyed
- Check that smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors work
- Confirm your mailbox key works and identify your mailbox number
Phase 3: First Two Weeks
Once the boxes are in, you shift from logistics to setup. Prioritize function over aesthetics — get the essentials working before worrying about how the place looks.
Kitchen and Bathroom Essentials
- Set up kitchen: dishes, cookware, utensils, a few pantry staples
- Stock bathroom: toilet paper, hand soap, towels, shower curtain and liner
- Buy basic cleaning supplies: all-purpose cleaner, dish soap, sponge, mop or Swiffer
- Get trash bags and identify where to take trash and recycling in your building
Furniture and Sleep
- Prioritize your bed — sleeping on the floor is miserable after night two
- Add a bedside lamp or lamp in your main living area before counting on overhead lighting
- Measure spaces before buying large furniture pieces (couch, dresser, dining table)
Admin and Safety
- Confirm all utilities are active and you know how to pay each bill
- Check that renter's insurance is in effect
- Share your new address with anyone who regularly mails you something
- Know your building's emergency procedures — fire exits, who to call for emergencies after hours
- Save your landlord/property manager's contact info in your phone
